Restaurant website accessibility: menus, ordering and reservations
Restaurant sites have a few recurring problem areas. Fixing them helps guests who use screen readers, magnification or keyboards, and it often helps your search ranking too.
Top fixes
- Menus as text, not images or scanned PDFs. See accessible menus and PDFs.
- Opening hours and address as text, not only inside a map or image.
- Reservation and ordering widgets: test them with a keyboard. If a third-party widget fails, offer a phone number and email alongside it.
- Photos of dishes: short, appetising alt text. Decorative background photos get empty alt.
- Contrast on text over food photography: add an overlay.
- Allergen information in text, with clear headings.
- Pop-ups (newsletters, cookie banners) must be closable with the keyboard and must not cover focused elements.
Platform tips
Many restaurants use Squarespace, Wix or WordPress; our platform guides show where each setting lives.
