Nonprofit and church website accessibility: donations, events and sermons
Accessibility fixes for nonprofit, church and community-group websites: donation forms, event calendars, sermon videos and newsletters.
Nonprofits and churches serve everyone in their community, including people with disabilities, so their websites need to work for everyone too. The most common problem areas are donation forms, event calendars and video.
1. Donation forms
Amount buttons ($25, $50, Other) should be real buttons or radio inputs inside a fieldset with a legend, so screen readers announce the choice. Third-party donation tools should be tested with the keyboard.
<fieldset><legend>Choose an amount</legend> <input type="radio" id="d25" name="amt" value="25"><label for="d25">$25</label> ...</fieldset>
2. Event calendars
Calendar grids are hard to use with a screen reader. Also list upcoming events as text with date, time, place and an accessibility note (step-free entry, ASL, hearing loop) where you have one.
3. Sermon, service and event videos
Add captions. Auto-generated captions are a start, but correct names and scripture references by hand. Post a transcript or summary for longer recordings.
4. Flyers and bulletins
Image flyers and scanned bulletins should also be published as text. See accessible PDFs.
5. Volunteer and contact forms
Visible labels, clear errors and a phone alternative. See accessible contact forms.
